The Barricks

I have known the Barricks for several years now. When my now wife and I moved to Saint George we fell in love with this little yellow house downtown. Fast forward to fall of that same year we were volunteering for a little non-profit (that I now sit on the board for, Project Rainbow). For $20 you rent a rainbow flag to stake in your yard for Pride season with all proceeds going into a community grant fund which funds other LGBTQ+ events, orgs, non-profits, and humans and their projects. The first year we had 60 flags, which was HUGE for this little conservative town and we were elated! And what house did we pull up to?! The little yellow house we loved! And what do you know, a queer couple came out to greet us while we staked the flag. We hopped back into our car and excitedly talked about how “of course it is a queer couple in our favorite house!” Little did we know just how much those two would mean to us later on. Morgan and Micah and little Sky (who is not so little anymore) have been friends now for several years, Micah even performed for us at our wedding drag show. When I nervously told them I wanted to finally follow a little pipe dream and get into photography they embraced that with excitement! They agreed to let me practice and we have done two sessions so far. One family session for long overdo family photos and a gender affirming session for Micah.

I explained how I really wanted to focus on the queer community knowing how hard it is to find inclusive photographers that are not only inclusive but actually know and understand the queer community on a level that only other queer folx can do. I told them that one of my offerings would be gender affirming sessions- think boudoir for trans and non-binary folxs with a photographer who is a safe and welcoming space. Micah was the first to be like, “Fuck yeah! Let’s do it!” Not only do I love their family session which has such a fun downtown vibe but I am also in love with their gender affirming session. Queer photographers for queer people are SO important- especially in our little conservative town. I am thankful for the community we have built and friends we have made- especially those that are down for fun photography sessions.

The family session was shot in downtown Saint George, Utah.
The gender affirming session was shot in a natural light studio in Saint George, Utah.
